The purpose of creating
these posters is to provide a positive message to
our young black men. The message encourages them to pull up their pants
and consider their potential more seriously. We are promoting the idea
that in order to command respect and endorse manhood, young men need
to disregard the fad of "sagging" and create their own reputable
style. Young men consider the look of wearing their pants well below
the waist as a fashion statement, a style that copies their favorite
rap artist—our goal is to get those young men to take a look in
the mirror and see their own potential instead of imitating self-proclaimed
thugs. We want these young men to see themselves as our future leaders
and TO realize that wearing their pants across or under their butt alienates
them from society and puts them as the subject of jokes and disgust.
Sagging was started in the U.S. prison system . It was not a clothes
wearing style authored by imprisoned homosexuals who intent was to advertise
sex, but because prisons issue oversized garb and belts are not permitted
in most correctional facilities. This made the prison uniforms fall
off the hips of the inmates and cause the sagging look.
